Belize is, without a doubt, one of the most talked about tropical paradises. There are a lot of reasons why Belize is the center of discussion when it comes to the best places for retirement. In this article I’m going to discuss only a few of those reasons.
· The single most obvious and striking reason is that Belize is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is one of the neglected diamonds in the Caribbean. Belize is approximately 8,866 square miles, 180 miles long and up to 68 miles wide. Over 200 beautiful islands go into making the beauty that is Belize. Another advantage is the Belize has a lot of so to speak ‘undiscovered’ beaches, which are stunning and well suited for fishing, scuba diving, and yachting. If you’re more into mountains than beaches, there’s a lot that Belize has to offer you as well with good hiking locations and facilities.
· If you’re a retiree from the US, UK or Canada, living in Belize for you is extremely cheap. This is because the government doesn’t tax you for income brought in from abroad. You are not permitted to work here, but are exempt from a lot of taxes. You can bring in a car or even an airplane to Belize without being charged import duties. Of course, the cost of living in Belize is way below what it is in the US.
· Belize has a long and rich democratic tradition. It is a lot safer than many of the Central American countries and so is good for retirees. Their constitution also includes a bill of rights.
· If you’re worried that Belize may not be a good prospect in terms of long-term investments, you can put your worries to rest. It has an offshore banking system similar to that of Switzerland. Another advantage with Belize that has to do with real estate is that full property insurance is also available.
· Yet another reason why Belize is a good place to retire to is that it’s extremely well connected to most major cities in the US. The airports are experiencing more air traffic than ever before and so are expanding to accommodate more flights. They will soon also have the infrastructure to support direct flights to Europe. At this point in time, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and Taca, run direct flights to a lot of the major American cities.
