FAMILY PLANNING ESSENTIAL IN CONTROLLING AIDS EPIDEMIC, REPORTS SAY
There is hardly anyone who can dispute the AIDS epidemic that is continuing to spread world-wide. Currently, an estimated 40 million people have the AIDS virus, half of all cases being women. The majority of these women live in sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV occurs in women at a rate of three for every two men. One of every four of these women have unplanned pregnancies. If not treated, babies born to HIV-infected mothers have a 15% to 30% chance of being infected prior to birth as well as after (such as during breastfeeding). Solutions to this epidemic often involve medication, but are costly and do not halt the spread of HIV.
One method, posed in the latest issue of the Population Reports, (published by the John Hopkins School of Public Health) is family planning. According to the report, family planning serves as both as a cost-efficient and successful method of combating the epidemic. Currently, funds for HIV mothers and their babies are focused on treatment options, such as ARV prophylaxis and stringent breastfeeding practices. While a helpful method for treating AIDS, the reports highlights the possible impact prevention would have in decreasing the number of children contracting HIV. It could also prevent the increasing growing number of orphans left in AIDS. Family planning in the sub-Saharan area has already prevented an estimated total of one million birth-related pregnancies yearly. An estimated additional 120,000 HIV positive birth are also estimated if family planning becomes the norm
Family planning options would focus on preventing the spread of HIV as well treatment with women with AIDS. Most women who have AIDS can safely use most forms of contraceptives, such as IUD’s (with doctor’s permission). Women with the HIV infection or AIDS can prevent spreading the disease through treatment and medication. HIV care providers may find this recent issue of the 24-page report beneficial to understanding how reproductive choices affect AIDS and help women diagnosed with the HIV virus in their decision to have children.
