Student Loans To Finance Your College Education

A college student does not have only his tuition fee to worry about. Students have to have enough money for food, books, everyday supplies, gas and even lab fees at times, depending on their subject. It is thus inevitable that most students would take up student loans to get through college since a lot parents are not able to help them out owing to their own financial situation. All costs taken into consideration, students often take loans that exceed $40,000.

What every student must keep in mind is that you should always try to apply for financial aid. A lot of students do not do so because they think they will not be eligible to get aid, but there are a lot of different criteria based on which one could be eligible for student financial aid and so there is no harm in giving it a shot.

If you have decided to search for financial aid, the first thing you have to do is to obtain the FAFSA form, free of charge. This is a federal student aid application form that judges your eligibility for various federal as well as private grants, scholarships and other forms of aid.

In the case of student loans, you can either go for a government loan or a private loan. The government loan, Stafford loan, is what you should apply for first. There is also a loan known as PLUS loan, which is a loan for parents who want to finance their childrens college education. Although government loans are usually better, do not ignore private loan since some of them are found to compete with the available government loans.

Federal Unsubsidized loans are those that are based on no-need. All those who meet the eligibility requirements would also meet the eligibility criterion for federal direct unsubsidized loans. There is even no necessity for the presence of a co-signer in the case of these loans. This is a loan given directly to the student. You have to apply for it by filling out and submitting the FAFSA form. Your application is processed and the concerned body then decides whether you are fit to receive the loan or not.

There are a number of avenues open to students these days. It is just a matter of doing your research well. The government really does offer good financial aid to students that you should take advantage of. If you are not eligible for those, try obtaining a private loan.
