The Dangers Of Credit Counseling

You could let debts control your life or you could control debts yourself! So many Americans are drowning in debt without having any clue about how to take control of the situation. It just keeps getting worse with more and more paychecks knocking on your door. We constantly keep watching interest rates coming up to your neck.

One solution to the ‘debt problem’ is credit counseling. But, before signing up with any credit-counseling firm it is important to gather all the information about what you’re putting your feet in.

There are quite a few credit-counseling firms. Some are legitimate and non-profit. They could be quite helpful as they work with you through it. Although, you may come across some that are illegitimate. There are also those who may say they are “nonprofit” and charge fees. Some charge high fees, some hide fees and there are also some who may ask for voluntary donations. Remember, you don’t want to add to your share of baggage while considering these options.

Finding the right credit counseling organization

You should be looking for firms that are ready to help you out and are transparent in their policies. See if they are willing to provide information about themselves free of charge. Look out for firms, which may ask for too many details from you before giving you any of theirs. Or even if they hassle you for an appointment, you can start looking for another firm.

You may want to get some ground details from a Credit Counseling Organization to start with. Some of the questions you should be asking are as follows

· Are they licensed to offer you services in your state?
· How much is their setup fee?
· What are their monthly fees?
· Are there any hidden costs that you should know of?
· Are their counselors accredited and/or certified by an outside organization? If so, by whom? If not, how are they trained? Third party certification adds an independent unofficial auditing that is helpful.
· Stay away from organizations whose counselors are pair through commission.
· Do you get any guarantee that your private information remains confidential and secure?
· What are the different services that they offer? Debt management may just be one of the concerns in a debt issue. It is probable that you could need other services to help you realize your requirements. You should be looking for a wide range of services without any predisposition. If the organization pushes on a particular service among the range of services they have, they are biased. For example, debt management plan (DMP)
· Ask them if they have an immediate debt management plan as well as a long term plan to help you remain on track in the future.
· Push for a formal written agreement or contract. You should have everything on paper and reviewed before you sign anything.

What you need to do once you’ve got the information in the mail is to verify whether the organization is legitimate. The sources that could help you verify that are the Attorney General of your state, a local consumer protection agency and Better Business Bureau. Make sure that they’re not only licensed but also have no complaints filed against them.

What makes checking their reputation more difficult is that they work with confidential information and so they’re entitled to refrain from giving you referrals. If you have to ask a friend or family member to recommend someone to you, please do so, even at the expense of you feeling slightly embarrassed or ashamed.

Many reputable organizations offer free education and workshops on coping with your financial worries. Their workshops, apart from helping you with your budgeting, will also give you a chance to check the organization out in person.

You could go to your local consumer protection agency or a financial institution to learn more about credit counseling services.

If you truly want to make your finances right, pay heed to what William F Halsey said, “All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them, but confront them.”
